We are happy to tell everyone that we have been given some brilliant news! We have made it to the lifestyle final!

This means that because of our efforts this summer we have a 1/4 chance that we could be going to Florida!
We are very happy that the work that we have put into making this summers project a success has paid off! We'd like to thank everyone who has helped support our project and any donations that have helped!

Making gift boxes

Here is a video we made showing you how to make your own gift boxes from left over greetings cards.  Our gift boxes were very popular at the Real Aid Fayre back at the beginning of the summer, and also at our exhibition.  We filled them with gummy bears, and facts and jokes about recycling.

Making gift boxes is simple and fun so have a go at making some yourself!

Making paper hearts

Here is a video we made showing how you can make your own paper hearts from old books or magazines.  They look great if you make lots and string them up to make bunting.

Have a go and let us know how you got on!

Honeysuckle Farm!

On 31st August we went to Honeysuckle Farm to spend the day with Special Smiles.  It was a lovely sunny day and we were so pleased to see all the disabled children enjoying themselves!  All the children were given food to feed the animals and a token for an ice-cream, and we felt very proud that we had been able to fund the day.

We were able to present Special Smiles with a cheque for £500, which more than covered the cost of the trip.  The rest of the money will be used by them to buy Christmas presents to give to the children at their Christmas party.

We had a lovely time and we would like to thank Special Smiles for such a lovely day!

Our Sponsored Swim!

Last Sunday we did our sponsored swim.  We did 300 lengths (100 each) of the pool at Beverley Leisure Centre.  After about ten lengths each we were really tired but we kept going and it got easier for a while.  We were really pleased when we finished and really proud that we had raised £250 between us!

We now have £500 to give to Special Smiles for the children to have a great day out at Honeysuckle Farm.  This is more money than they need for the trip, but the rest of the money we raised will go towards Christmas presents for the children at their Christmas party, which we think is a lovely idea.

We would like to say a really big THANK YOU to everyone who sponsored us!!

Our Exhibition!

We had a great day last Sunday at our exhibition.  Lots of people came along to see our art and we were very happy at the amount of good comments that people left for us on our 'comment tree'!

We raised £250 for Special Smiles and we think that we promoted recycling really well by showing how it can be done creatively and in a fun way.

We would like to say a big thank you to all the people that supported us - making donations of materials for the art, donating tombola prizes, helping out on the day and to all the people who came to see our art!!

Saturday 11 August 2012

Today we went to see two artists called Nicki and Helen! They were both very nice and gave us plenty of ideas and advice for our art exhibition! Helen let us borrow some of her equipment and she also gave us some of her spare old material. We showed her some of the recycled clocks that we'd made and she was very impressed!
Nicki showed us how to make paper mache animals using old newspaper and wire. They were all very good and it encouraged us to have a go at making some ourselves!

When we got back we decided to have a go at making a paper mache elephant! We made a basic elephant shape out of some old chicken wire and then we put a layer of old newspaper around it and secured it down with lots of tape. After that we made a paste using flour, water and salt. We then dipped strips of newspaper into the paste and covered the elephant with it! All we have to do now is wait for it to dry properly before we do the next layer!

This is the chicken wire sculpture of the elephant:

This is us putting on the newspaper layer:

Today we also went to a photography studio to get some snap shots of us!
We are planning on sticking recycled materials around the edge of our faces on the funny pics, to form a wacky hairstyle!
This worked well!
It was also quite fun!!

This is us at the studio:

This is a pic of us creating our wacky hairstyles on our funny pictures:

Today we spent a whole 27 hours between us on making art for the Bin Buddies Exhibition!

We made an amazing, big heart-shaped jigsaw piece of art out of 4 old jigsaw puzzles and a full can of bright red spray paint!
It looked great!!

This is a picture of us making the jigsaw puzzle art:

We then spray painted it red:

We also made some other pieces of art that looked equally as cool! They were made out of floppy disks that were spray painted different colours!

Art of Recycling Exhibition

We are holding an exhibition of art made from recycled materials - this is in aid of Special Smiles, to fund a trip to Honeysuckle Farm for disabled children.

Please see the poster below for more details.

We are hoping that lots of people will attend so please come along and don't forget to tell all your friends and family about it!

Real Aid Fayre

On Sunday we held a stall at the Real Aid Fayre in Tickton.  We had been working hard making 60 clocks from recycled materials for the event.  We also made gift boxes out of old Christmas and Birthday cards and filled them with gummy bears and facts and jokes about recycling.  The gift boxes sold quite well and we sold some of the clocks.  We hope to hold a car boot sale to sell some more but will take any left over to our exhibition on 19th August.

We had a great day and it was a good opportunity to publicise our art exhibition and raise the awareness of recycling in Tickton.

Thank you to Real Aid for holding such a great event!

Tickton Primary School Assembly

Today we were invited to our old Primary School to hold an assembly for years 4,5 and 6 about our Lifestyle project last year and the issue of recycling.

We put together a powerpoint presentation and made two videos to show how we got on last year and to encourage children to recycle, pick up dog mess and use litter bins.

We felt nervous but the children seemed to enjoy the presentation, especially the videos!  A lot of them said they were keen to do Lifestyle this year and in years to come so we felt we had really inspired them, which we were very happy about!

Welcome to the Bin Buddies blog

Welcome to the new 2012 Bin Buddies blog page!

We are Evie, Kate and Liv - three thirteen year old girls from Beverley High School, and are taking part in Humberside Police's Lifestyle competition.  This is our third year in the competition and we are hoping that we will be as successful as in the past two years.

In 2010 we litter picked and raised money for two new bins for the village of Tickton.  We won an amazing PGL adventure holiday to Wales, and also won mountain bikes and trophies as winners of the GreenScene Award.

In 2011 we made 79 clocks from recycled materials and held an exhibition that people could attend and buy the clocks to raise money for 5000 leaflets about recycling for schools and clock movements for D&T classes.  We also raised £400 for Real Aid, a local charity.  This year we were runners up and won a fantastic PGL adventure holiday in France, as well as two days at Disneyland Paris.

This year we are hoping to extend the theme of reusing and recycling by holding an art exhibition of artwork we have made from recycled materials.  We also plan to hold a sponsored wheelchair event to help raise money for a group called 'Special Smiles' to take their disabled children on a day trip to Honeysuckle Farm.

We are hoping that people will follow us on our blog to see how we are able to make a difference to our local community.

Thanks for joining us!

Evie, Kate and Liv
